Movie Review: Inception
I watched this because I was repeatedly told that it was very similar to the Matrix, a film that I really enjoyed. I was not disappointed.
The visual effects in this are stunning. Absolutely stunning. After a few minutes of research, I was even more shocked to find out that most of the effects were practical: they built rotating sets and the like, which made it even more impressive. The action is very well-choreographed and despite the fact that the film is quite action-heavy, the timing and pacing make it feel otherwise. A someone who has been fascinated by dreams and the subconscious their entire life, I personally loved the way that this rather abstract and ambiguous concept was used in such a striking was by Nolan. The acting was great, in particular by Leonardo DiCaprio, Elliot Page and Marion Cotillard.
Let me just say that I'm not part of Nolan's cult following that think that he's some sort of infallible god. This is not the best film in the world. However, it, liken The Matrix, is that perfect balance between action and intellectual. Thought provoking ideas are the appeal of most of Nolan's movies and why they tend to be so popular. I'm going to call a spade a spade: even though this may not be the world's greatest movie, it's for sure an exciting introduction to all that film can be.
One common criticism of this film is that it is hard to follow. I cannot help but agree - a few moments in the film left me confused. However, that realisation at the very end of the film when everything clicks is simply perfect. Another problem I have is the sheer volume of characters. In the first half of the movie, so many characters were introduced that I had some trouble keeping up.
However, this doesn't change the fact that this is a one-of-a-kind science fiction film that will have you both doubting reality and on the edge of your seat at the same time.
