Movie Review: The Yellow Handkerchief
I found this film when I was randomly scrolling through IMDb and decided to give it a go. One word, three letters - wow.
I'm not usually that into romantic films. I feel like they all tend to descend into cringe-worthy romantic comedies that only exist for cheap laughs. But this film is simply breathtaking. Firstly, I am well aware that 'the road trip' had been quite overused by Hollywood (the Green Book and Rain Man, to give a few examples) , but this film redefines the benchmark for a road trip film. The character progression in this film is some of the best I have ever seen, and I really enjoyed how the film is told through a combination of linear action and flashbacks, revealing things slowly until it reaches a beautiful crescendo. I also love the music in this film - it's so beautiful and minimalistic but creates such a rich atmosphere and adds to the scenes so much.
A common criticism of this film is that it is quite slow, especially in the first half. I understand why people make this point, but I disagree. In my opinion, I found that the stories of each of the three main characters were told in a very unique and interesting way without laying on the feelings too thickly.
This film is a masterpiece. It is a story about love, loss, personal growth and relationships.
